Tura, June 8: Holding shovels instead of rackets and planting trees instead of serves; member of the West Garo Hills District Badminton Association (WGHDBA) on Saturday celebrated the World Environment Day with a promise for a greener future. This wasn’t just about planting trees; it was about cultivating a deeper sense of environmental responsibility within the community.
Led by their General Secretary, Walsang N. Sangma, the association’s members and players as well as supportive local well-wishers, gathered at the old Chibragre picnic spot to not only add saplings to the soil but to ignite a passion for environmental conservation and inspire collective action to preserve the stunning natural beauty of the West Garo Hills.
A diverse array of indigenous tree saplings were carefully chosen for the drive. These weren’t random selections; they were species known for their ecological benefits and their ability to thrive in the local climate, including those that offer cooling shade, bear nourishing fruit, and help stabilize the soil.
“As custodians of the future, it is our duty not only to nurture talent on the court but also to protect the environment off the court,” declared Sangma to the gathering. He emphasized the crucial link between athletic pursuits and social accountability, adding, “This plantation drive is a small but significant step toward that vision.”
The selection of the old Chibragre picnic spot also holds A special meaning. Once a bustling hub of community life, this location is now being revitalized with new greenery, symbolizing a fresh breath of life. The WGHDBA hopes this effort will encourage both locals and visitors to cherish and safeguard their natural surroundings.
The event concluded with a collective pledge from all attendees to remain committed to environmental sustainability. The association also announced its intention to make this tree plantation drive an annual event, aligning with their broader goals of environmental stewardship and community engagement.
