Shillong, May 27: NPP leader and cabinet minister James K Sangma on Friday slammed the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma for casting aspersion on the report and recommendations made by the Independent Inquiry Committee.

“Now if the report comes out and it is not to his (Mukul) liking does not mean that you know then cry wolf over terms of references,” James told reporters.

“I think that he should show more graciousness by accepting the report because casting aspersions on the report means casting aspersions on the persons who have conducted the inquiry,” he said.

On Thursday, Mukul had expressed disappointment against the report of the Independent Inquiry Committee into the alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

“(From) the very beginning itself, I have expressed my concern after having looked at the terms of reference of the notification for having a commission of inquiry to go into details of this alleged irregularities and corruption in the organization in MeECL and therefore, you will not have the actual truth unearth by this exercise,” he told reporters.

Mukul reiterated that a separate inquiry should be instituted on any instance of alleged irregularities.

The Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the committee had found nothing wrong in the procurement aspects.

“…in terms of other aspects of procurement and all they have not found any wrongs in any of them,” he added.

The CM had informed that the Independent Inquiry Committee has strongly recommended the state government to appoint a full time Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeELC) and to come up with new systems to look into the procurement aspects.

Stating that he is yet to read the report, James however said, “but then this is something that you know we have always maintained that all procedure was followed there was nothing untoward in the process and if chief minister saying that there’s nothing in that report then we have to believe that there is nothing that report and it was an independent inquiry carried out by retired Justice of this high court so we have to go by that I guess.”
