Jowai, Mar 5: A public hearing with regard to the proposed setting up of a Sanitary Landfill of the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) for dumping garbage from Jowai Town saw opposition to the project by the people as they raised concerns over the pollution it would cause.

The hearing was held at Thadmusem village of West Jaiñtia Hills on Friday and presided over by the Deputy Commissioner of the District, Garod LSN Dykes.

The hearing was participated by hundreds of people from villages surrounding the proposed project, viz. Nongkhroh, Thadmusem, Larnai, Sohphoh and other villages from the area.

During the hearing a majority of the people expressed their opposition to the project stating that it will affect their farms, pollute the water bodies and air.

They also claimed that if they support the project now, the future generation will pay the price and, thus, objected to the Sanitary Landfill project.
