Guwahati, May 19: The iconic Assam’s Kaziranga National Park has witnessed a surge in the tourist flow and the tourism industry in Assam has been garnering profits due to the sudden rise in tourism in the state.
Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), a popular tourist destination in Assam, has seen a record surge in footfall and revenue in the 2023-24 financial year. A total of 3,27,493 tourists visited Kaziranga National park in the 2023-24 season.
Speaking to reporters, Assam tourism minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said,”the remarkable surge in tourism in Assam, particularly to the iconic Kaziranga National Park, has been a great success which can be attributed to three factors. Firstly, the era of peace established under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been transformative. His administration’s decisive efforts have ended decades of militancy, reshaping Assam’s image from a conflict zone to a secure and welcoming destination,”.
“This newfound tranquility has significantly bolstered tourist confidence, encouraging many to explore the stunning landscapes of Kaziranga. Secondly, the state’s enhanced connectivity has been crucial. Upgraded infrastructure, including the bustling Guwahati airport and an extensive network of new roads and bridges, has made Assam more accessible than ever,” the minister said.
He further added, “These improvements have seamlessly linked Assam with the rest of the country, facilitating easier and more convenient travel for visitors. Lastly, the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a game-changer,”.
“His visit to Kaziranga garnered international attention, highlighting the park’s unique biodiversity and cultural significance. This visit not only elevated Kaziranga’s profile but also attracted an unprecedented number of tourists eager to experience the park’s wonders firsthand. Together, these factors have created a perfect synergy, propelling Assam’s tourism to unprecedented heights and firmly establishing Kaziranga as a must-visit destination on the global tourism map,” said Jayanta Mallabaruah.
The 2021-22 had also been one of the best years for the park when it saw a footfall of 2.75 lakh and revenue collection od Rs 6 crore during the tourist season between October 2021 to May 2022.
The park sees on an average a tourist footfall of 1.8 lakh every year.
Kaziranga National Park is a hub of unique biodiversity and natural beauty. Spread across 430 sq km, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is noted for its iconic inhabitants, mostly notably the endangered one-horn rhinoceros.
