SHILLONG, APR 7: KHADC Executive Member and Mawthadraishan MDC Powell Sohkhlet has expressed concern over the allocation of funds for repairing 180 government lower primary schools in Meghalaya, alleging partiality in the process.
“The government has earmarked funds for repairing of only 8 schools in Eastern West Khasi Hills district out of 180 schools, while West Garo Hills district is getting 38 schools, West Jaintia Hills 29, East Khasi Hills 19, East Jaintia Hills 9, West Khasi Hills 8,” Sohkhlet said, questioning the disparity.
He emphasized, “I appreciate the state government’s initiative to repair and renovate lower primary schools, but the allocation process seems biased. Eastern West Khasi Hills has over 80 government lower primary schools, most of which are in a dilapidated state, yet only 8 have been sanctioned funds.”
Sohkhlet suggested utilizing part of the Rs 125 crore fund for deficit and adhoc schools, saying, “Teachers in these schools receive government salaries, but building repairs are left to school management committees. Why not allocate funds from this initiative for these schools?”
He urged vigilance, “I call on village dorbars and school managements to ensure contractors implement the funds transparently, benefiting students.”
