Must read

SHILLONG, JUN 18: The Khasi Traditional Medicine Institute at Lumsohpetbneng, constructed at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore, remains non-functional and in a dilapidated condition, Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh informed the House during the council session on Thursday.

Responding to a question by Laban MDC Ricky Shullai, Lyngdoh said the institute was leased out in 2014 to the Centre Learning of Knowledge and Services, run by BG Byrsat, for 20 years at an annual lease fee of Rs 6 lakh. However, the Executive Committee has not received any payment from the lessee till date.

“As of today, the Centre is non-functional, it is in dilapidated conditions and till now there is no activities in the Centre,” the CEM stated.

Lyngdoh said the EC will summon BG Byrsat for discussion to ascertain whether he is willing to run the institute. If not, the lessee will be asked to hand it back to the district council. The Council will also demand payment of pending lease dues, as not a single rupee has been paid since 2014.

The CEM added that the KHADC will explore legal avenues to take back the institute and may issue a show cause notice to BG Byrsat if he fails to appear for the meeting.

The institute, meant to promote Khasi traditional medicine, has remained unused since being leased out over a decade ago, drawing concerns from members over the underutilization of a major infrastructure asset.
