SHILLONG, JUN 18: Congress Tura MP Saleng A Sangma on Thursday praised the determination of persons with disabilities in Meghalaya, saying the state takes pride in PwDs who lead through talent and self-reliance instead of depending on handouts.
Sangma was addressing the first-ever Purple Fair for Persons with Disabilities held at BADO Multi Facility Centre Hall, Ampati.
The fair was organized by CRCSRE-Shillong under DEPwD, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, in collaboration with the South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office and District Social Welfare Officer.

“The determination and resilience of persons with disabilities in Meghalaya is something we are proud of,” the MP told the gathering of PwDs, caregivers, officials and public representatives.
He said PwDs in the state “continuously strive to make a positive difference in society through their talents, hard work, and self-reliance rather than depending on handouts.”
Highlighting technology support, Sangma informed the audience that special spectacles to assist blind and visually impaired persons are being developed.
He assured that he would work toward making such innovations accessible to people in the Garo Hills region.
The event also saw participation from MLAs Subir M. Marak, Sanjay A Sangma and Miani D. Shira, who reaffirmed their commitment to disability rights and inclusion.
The fair featured cultural performances, sports, and an exhibition-sale where PwD entrepreneurs, SHGs and NGOs displayed handicrafts, local products and assistive devices.
Sangma, along with the MLAs, felicitated PwD artistes including singer Jebilbang Sangma, Indian blind football captain and Paralympic athlete Klingson D. Sangma, and singer Plogen T. Sangma, all from South West Garo Hills.
The Purple Fair was aimed at creating platforms for skills, entrepreneurship and livelihoods for PwDs while spreading awareness on accessibility and dignity.
