Kim Jong Un urges North Korean women to boost birth rates, tears up during address; Viral video

New Delhi, Dec 6: A video of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has gone viral on social media where he is seen wiping his tears. The video is said to be from a recent event where he urged women to have more children to tackle the country’s falling birth rates.

“Preventing a decline in birth rates and good childcare are all of our housekeeping duties we need to handle while working with mothers,” Kim was quoted as saying by the news agency Reuters at the event for mothers in Pyongyang on Sunday.

He also thanked mothers for their effort in strengthening national power.

Kim Jong Un said that even he thinks of his mother when he faces hard time dealing with the party and the state’s work.

According to media reports, Kim Jong Un said, “Stopping the decline in birthrates and providing good child care and education are all our family affairs that we should solve together with our mothers”.

As per United Nations data, the average number of children being born in North Korea by a mother stood at 1.8 as of 2023 amid an extended fall in birth in recent decades.

However, the figure remains higher than North Korea’s neighbours which are also witnessing a downward trend.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s fertility rate, is the lowest in the developed world.
