SHILLONG, JULY 21: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) Northern Border Area on Wednesday filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the author of a book and the school authority for publishing and using a text book of social studies which gives wrong information about the official languages of Meghalaya.

“We request your concerned department to take legal action as per law against the author of the book and the school authority,” KSU-NBA said in its FIR filed with the Khanapara police station in Ri Bhoi District.

The Union informed that it had come to its notice on July 20 that the Little Star Senior Secondary School, 9th Mile, Baridua Ri Bhoi District was using a text book of social studies in class III with wrong contents in it.

The book has indicated that the official languages of Meghalaya are Bengali, Nepali and Marathi instead of local languages Khasi and Garo languages. This will no doubt mislead the students of the school, the Union said.

The book is written by Dr Dhananjay Joshi and Neelam Jain, and published by Bright Star Books International, 521-Vasnat Kunj, New Delhi-110070 and approved by NCERT.

The Union also expressed concern about the book which might have reached schools of other states and that if no action taken this will affect the sentiments of Khasi community.
