KSU Jowai circle forces correction of wrong village name on NHAI signboard

SHILLONG, MAR 3: The Jowai Circle of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday got the National Highways Authority of India to erase the misspelt village name “Khaleriat” from a signboard at the Soomer, bypass in West Jaintia Hills, and demanded installation of a fresh board reading “Khliehriat” within a month.

In a statement after the action, KSU Jowai Circle said the error was not the first spellings of Khliehriat had been wrong before, even in a bank and warned that such “attempts to change the name of villages” in Khasi and Jaintia Hills would hurt local pride.

“This mistake will bring loss of the great honour of Khliehriat village,” it said.

The correction followed complaints from residents.

Under the leadership of its president Ewanmi Phawa and circle members, the union went to the site and ordered the misspelling removed at once.

A letter was also given to NHAI to put up a new board with the correct spelling and fix other signboards, papers and digital platforms where the error appears.

KSU further warned shops, offices and others to write the village name correctly, saying anyone found repeating the mistake would face action “as per the law.”
