SHILLONG, DEC 19: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Thursday unveiled a lifesize statue of legendary Khasi poet U Soso Tham on his 85th death anniversary at NEHU campus.
In his address, NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa emphasized the relevance of U Soso Tham’s poetry in today’s context, saying it reminds the community to fight for indigenous rights.
“When we read the poem of U Soso Tham, it makes us realize that we need to come forward and fight for the interest and cause of the indigenous community,” Jyrwa said.
He highlighted Tham’s visionary work, adding, “His poetry is totally relevant with our present day.”
Jyrwa stressed the need for effective laws like ILP and MRSSA, criticizing the government’s inaction.
“Despite promises, the government is yet to implement MRSSA,” he said, recalling past agitations that reflected the community’s insecurity.
“I am confident that this movement will be revived to address issues confronting us,” Jyrwa added.
KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar emphasized the importance of U Soso Tham’s legacy, saying his works inspire the community’s fight for protection.
“U Soso Tham’s death anniversary reminds us of his great contributions to the Khasi society,” Marngar said.
“It would be meaningless for us to live 100 years without contributing anything to the society.”
Marngar reiterated KSU’s commitment to addressing community issues, warning against complacency.
“Soso Tham warned us that we may become water carriers of someone else. External forces are waiting for their moment,” he said.
He criticized governments for delaying laws to protect indigenous interests, citing ILP and MRSSA. “Youth will be the law to protect the indigenous community and the land,” Marngar warned.
