Dibrugarh, Dec 20: A full-grown leopard that had been terrorising residents near the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Ltd (BCPL) complex in Dibrugarh’s Lepetkata area was successfully captured by the Forest Department on Saturday morning.
The leopard had been prowling around the industrial site for several days, triggering panic among local residents. In response, forest officials set up an iron trap cage baited with live prey.
The operation concluded on Saturday when the animal entered the cage and was secured without injury.
A Forest Department official said the leopard will be examined by veterinarians before being translocated and released deep inside Dehing Patkai National Park, away from human settlements.
Officials added that the tea estates surrounding the area, with their dense vegetation, offer suitable habitat for leopards, which often stray into human-dominated landscapes in search of territory or prey.
