Guwahati, June 10: Construction of a cement factory faced strong opposition from hundreds of locals in Sonpur on Monday. The residents are worried that the supposed cement factory will destroy the natural environment and will also harm the people residing.
According to locals, the Taj Cement Authority is heading in the direction of building a cement factory with a production capacity of Rs 10 lakh per year, keeping the public in the dark. A public hearing program was organized on Monday to express their opinion and address the concern of the locals, district development commissioner Parijat Bhuyan and Taj Cement Authority officials were also present to address the grievances. The grievances redressal turned violent when people started protesting, and they attacked with chairs and sharp weapons. Many people also got injured. Police intervened to control the situation and the mob.
The situation has been brought under control now.
