Mahmood Madani criticises Assam evictions, calls for rehabilitation of displaced citizens

Must read

Guwahati, Sept 2: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Mahmood Madani on Tuesday condemned the ongoing eviction drives in Assam, urging the state government to ensure proper rehabilitation for affected citizens.

Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati after visiting areas hit by the evictions, Madani described the operations as “deeply painful and against established norms.”
“Evictions happen everywhere, but the way it is being conducted here is saddening. Nations are built on systems, and when actions disregard Supreme Court guidelines, they are not only unlawful but also inhuman,” he said.

Madani further alleged that political motives were influencing the operations, with certain communities being labelled derogatorily to consolidate power.

“Displacing people with such an attitude is more painful than the eviction itself,” he added.

Clarifying his organisation’s stance, Madani emphasised that while they do not oppose the deportation of foreigners if due process confirms their status, Indian citizens should not face humiliation and must be rehabilitated.

“The Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that evictions must be accompanied by rehabilitation plans. We demand that the Assam government make proper arrangements, keeping humanity in view. If someone is a foreigner, deport them; if they are an Indian citizen, rehabilitate them,” he said.
