Main accused of Batadrava police station arson case died in road accident

Guwahati, May 30: The main accused in Batadrava police station arson case died in a road accident while trying to flee from a police vehicle on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Ashiqul Islam.

Police claimed that Ashiqul Islam tried to jump out of a police vehicle when he got hit by another police vehicle which was just behind.

Nagaon Superintendent of police Leena Doley said, “On yesterday we have arrested the main accused Ashiqul Islam who was involved in Batadrava police station arson case. During interrogation, he admitted that he had kept arms in his house. We have seized one 7.62 pistol, one .22 pistol and seven numbers ammunition from his house. We have aslo seized the red T-shirt from his house,”.

“When he was taken back to police station, he tried to flee from the police vehicle and got hit by another police vehicle which was behind. We have rushed him to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” said Doley.

Police have arrested 11 people so far in connection to the arson case at Batadrava police station by a mob following alleged custodial death of a fish seller, Safiqul Islam.

On May 21, an irate mob at Batadrava in Nagaon district of Assam vandalized and set the Batadrava police station on fire, following “custodial death” of a fish trader.
