Imphal, Dec 11: Thousands of people, including students, gathered in Imphal on Tuesday to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), and swift action against those responsible for the brutal killing of three women and three children in Jiribam.
The rally, organized by five influential groups, including the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, the All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights COHR, and Manipur Student Federation, commenced from Thau Ground in Imphal West district and spanned approximately 5 kilometers before culminating at Khuman Lampak Stadium, where a public meeting was held.
Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans such as “Do not obliterate Manipur” and “Save Manipur,” highlighting their call for the immediate repeal of AFSPA. Participants included diverse community members and relief camp residents, underlining the widespread discontent.
AMUCO President Nando Luwang, addressing the media, blamed the government for the ongoing unrest in Manipur, which has persisted for over 19 months. He stated that the rally, held on International Human Rights Day, was intended to draw global attention to the plight of Manipur’s people and their shattered rights.
“While India shines on the global stage, Manipur languishes in darkness,” Luwang said, urging changes to government policies that have allegedly exacerbated ethnic tensions. He accused the government of orchestrating the crisis and called for unity among communities to restore peace.
AMAWOVA leader S. Nirupama echoed these sentiments, condemning AFSPA as a tool that has perpetuated civilian casualties under the pretext of combating militancy. She also denounced the recent killings in Jiribam and demanded justice for the victims.
The gruesome murder of three women and three children in Jiribam has sparked widespread protests and violence across multiple districts, including Imphal West and Imphal East. The unrest has seen mobs targeting the properties of ministers, legislators, and political leaders.
In response to the volatile situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs recently reinstated AFSPA in six police station areas in Manipur, including the violence-stricken Jiribam district, which borders southern Assam. Critics argue that this move will only exacerbate tensions and suppress the voices of the affected communities.
The rally underscored the collective demand for the right to self-determination and an end to policies that perpetuate division and unrest. Speakers at the public meeting emphasized the need for unity among Manipur’s diverse communities to rebuild trust and ensure lasting peace.
