Imphal, May 1: In a major operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested the alleged prime accused in the 2023 killing of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anandakumar Singh in Manipur’s Moreh town.
The accused, identified as Otkhothang Baite alias Othang Baite, is a resident of Moreh in Tengnoupal district.
According to the NIA, Baite was involved in the conspiracy behind the attack carried out by members of a suspected Kuki militant group on a district police team at a playground. He belongs to the Kuki community.
The militants opened fire on the police team on October 31, 2023, during the peak of ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Reports said the SDPO, who was from the Meitei community, sustained a bullet injury to the abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries.
A case was initially registered by Moreh police and was subsequently handed over to the NIA in March 2024.
“During the investigation, it was found that the conspiracy was aimed at creating terror in Manipur,” the NIA said.
Earlier this month, the agency had arrested another accused, Kamginthang Gangte, in connection with the case.
The killing triggered widespread protests in the Meitei-dominated valley, with demands for swift action against those responsible.
