Imphal, Nov 18: Civil society groups in Manipur’s Imphal Valley have intensified protests against the central government, accusing it of failing to curb the ongoing violence in the state. Protesters have begun locking down central government offices and institutions as a symbolic act of defiance.
On Monday, large crowds took to the streets, expressing their anger and frustration. “The recent killings of minors and women have shocked the people of Manipur. It is evident that the government has failed to protect lives and property,” a member of the protesting group stated.
“This lockdown is a mark of protest. If the government fails to act swiftly to resolve the crisis, we will escalate our movement,” he warned.
In response to the escalating tensions, authorities imposed curfews in Imphal East and Imphal West to restore order.
The unrest was further fueled by the recovery of six bodies, including women and children, in the violence-hit Jiribam district. The situation worsened after a photograph of a woman’s body, recovered from the Barak River, was widely circulated on social media, igniting widespread outrage.
Following these events, 25 individuals were arrested across Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts for their involvement in ransacking and arson. Reports indicate that the homes of ministers, MLAs, and political leaders were targeted in retaliation.
The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have intensified their presence in the affected areas. On Sunday, Lt. Gen. A. S. Pendharkar, GOC, Spear Corps, visited the region to assess the security situation and interact with deployed troops. Joint forces conducted flag marches in key locations, including Sanjenthong, Khurai Lamlong Bridge, and Thoubal, to reassure residents and maintain peace.
