Security forces conduct flag march in Imphal amid escalating tensions

Imphal, Nov 18: A flag march was conducted by combined security forces, including the Army in Imphal, Manipur on Sunday night after the situation worsened in the state.

Lt Gen A S Pendharkar, GOC, Spear Corps visited Indian Army, and Assam Rifles units in Manipur on Nov 17 and interacted with the troops deployed in security duties in Imphal.

Indian Army, and Assam Rifles units of Spear Corps undertook flag marches in Imphal at Sanjenthong, Khurai Lamlong Bridge, Thongju Bridge, Koirengei, Kangla Western Gate, Keishampat, Chungtham, Salam Mayai Leikai, Konthujam, Mayang Imphal, Hiyangthang, Nambol, Mantripukhri, Babupara, Wangjing, Thoubal and Lilong of Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts, in coordination with security forces.

Security forces are undertaking all necessary steps for the early restoration of peace and normalcy.

Authorities have imposed a curfew in Imphal West and Imphal East to maintain law and order situation.

Fresh violence was reported following the recovery of six bodies, including children in the violence-hit Jiribam district.

The situation escalated after a photo of a woman’s body, recovered from the Barak River, was widely circulated on social media.

In the aftermath of the protests, 25 individuals were arrested from Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts for their involvement in ransacking and arson.

The recovery of the six bodies believed to be the six women and children missing since November 11, sparked widespread attacks on the residences of ministers, MLAs, and political leaders in several districts, including Imphal East and Imphal West.

On the other hand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed Manipur’s security status during a meeting with senior officials in Delhi on Sunday. Shah is expected to hold another detailed discussion with officials today at 12 pm.
