Dibrugarh, July 22: A fresh wave of massive erosion by the Brahmaputra River at Maijan, near the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Dibrugarh, has raised serious concerns among residents.
“A fresh round of erosion began last night. So far, about 15 feet of land has been swallowed by the mighty river. We’ve been spending sleepless nights since it started,” said a local resident.
He added, “Every year, erosion eats away a large portion of our land. Huge areas of cultivable land have already been lost, and yet, no permanent solution has been implemented despite the ongoing threat.”
In response, the district administration has stepped up emergency measures to tackle the erosion. Officials from the Water Resources Department have visited the site and initiated short-term interventions to contain further damage.
“In many areas, geo-bags used as temporary barriers have been swept away by the current. A permanent solution is urgently needed,” said another resident of Dibrugarh.
It is worth noting that the devastating earthquake of August 15, 1950 (8.7 magnitude) significantly altered the course of the Brahmaputra. The seismic event lifted the riverbed near Dibrugarh by several meters. As a result, the river now flows higher than the town’s ground level, making it highly vulnerable to seasonal flooding and erosion.
