Tripura to strictly enforce CAA with 2014 cut-off: CM Manik Saha

Must read

Agartala, July 22: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday announced that the state will strictly implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA), adhering to the cut-off date of December 31, 2014, for granting Indian citizenship to immigrants.

“Only those who fled religious persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Bangladesh and entered India on or before December 31, 2014, are eligible for citizenship under the CAA. Anyone arriving after this date will be treated as an illegal migrant,” Saha stated.

To curb infiltration, the state has constituted a Special Task Force (STF) and instructed district magistrates and the police to intensify surveillance.

Saha said coordination with border forces has significantly reduced illegal entries in recent months.

His remarks come amid growing tensions with BJP’s coalition partner Tipra Motha, which has demanded that all migrants who entered after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War be recognized as illegal—echoing the terms of the Indira-Mujib Accord.
