Baghmara, July 22: South Garo Hills is fast emerging as an agri-export hub. Earlier, oranges from Rongsu Agal near Siju were exported to Dubai and now black pepper is the latest entry.
Ten metric tons of premium-grade black pepper were shipped to Mumbai on July 21marking a major breakthrough for local farmers. Valued at ₹64 lakhs, the consignment was sent to Sundardas Rathansey Spices Private Limited under the PRIME Meghalaya initiative.
Sourced from 200 farmers of Eman Gatabil and Denggagre Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS), the shipment was flagged off from Emangre. The ceremony was attended by District Horticulture Officer Tahsri M. Momin, PRIME Baghmara DPM Brilliar Ch. Sangma, and IVCS members.
This marks the first-ever black pepper export from the district to Mumbai—and the final batch for the season.
Until recently, farmers relied on middlemen and earned just ₹550–₹570 per kg. But with Integrated Village Cooperative Societies formation and market linkages through PRIME Meghalaya, they are now selling directly to buyers and earning significantly better returns.
“It’s a big moment for farmers. Their produce is now reaching the importer directly,” said Brilliar Ch. Sangma, DPM, PRIME Baghmara.
Haggai G. Momin of Eman Gatabil IVCS credited the state’s leadership: “We thank Chief Minister Dr. Conrad K. Sangma for this opportunity to grow and export our produce.”
This shipment is being seen as a turning point—boosting farmer incomes and connecting Meghalaya’s produce with national markets.
