Guwahati, Dec 3: India is set to enter the global adventure racing arena in an unprecedented way, with Mechukha in Arunachal Pradesh confirmed as the host of the 2026 Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) Qualifier—India and Asia’s only qualifying race for the AR World Championship 2027.
The announcement, reflected on the ARWS Qualifier website and shared by Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona on social media, positions Mechukha as the newest high-altitude destination for world-class expedition racing.
The event, titled Adventure @ Mechukha – Expedition, will take place in November 2026 (dates currently provisional), with registrations opening on January 31. Only 30 team slots will be available, making it one of the most exclusive adventure races in the region.
State Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona said the event will serve as the gateway to the AR World Championship 2027—marking a major milestone for Arunachal’s adventure tourism ambitions.
“The international race will bring elite adventure racing teams from around the world to Mechukha, showcasing the region’s dramatic high-altitude terrain, pristine valleys and rugged frontier landscapes” he said.
Sona said the selection builds on the success of the National Adventure Racing Championship held last year, which established Mechukha as one of India’s fastest-growing adventure hubs.
Nestled 6,000 feet above sea level in West Siang district, Mechukha—also known as Menchukha—offers a landscape described as “a world untouched by time.” Surrounded by snow-clad peaks, pine forests and the glacial-fed Siyom (Yargyap Chu) River, the valley lies close to the Indo-Tibet border and is home to the Memba, Ramо, Bokar, Liba and Tagin tribes.
“The 2026 ARWS Qualifier will significantly boost global visibility, eco-tourism and border tourism, and attract adventure travellers from across the world,” Sona noted.
The ARWS Qualifier in Mechukha will be jointly hosted by Indian adventure racing pioneers Ajita Madan and Sayeesha Kirani, alongside Heidi and Stephan Muller, the team behind 11 editions of Expedition Africa and the AR World Championship 2023.
“This is not just a race—it is history in the making,” the organisers said on the official site, emphasising that the event aims to showcase India’s adventure potential, heritage and terrain to the world.
Officials said hosting Asia’s only ARWS Qualifier will significantly boost eco-tourism, border tourism and global visibility for Arunachal. Mechukha, already celebrated for its dramatic scenery and adventure offerings, is expected to see heightened international attention as top expedition racing teams converge on the valley.
