Meghalaya brings back almost all students from Manipur, evacuated over 300 students in 4 days

Shillong, May 8: Almost all students, who are studying in violence hit Manipur, have been brought back safely to the state, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed on Monday.

“Probably the last group of students has landed in Shillong directly. There was one more flight we organized today directly from Imphal to Shillong,” Sangma told reporters.

He said that in the last three days, almost 300 plus students have been brought back from Manipur.

Stating that the government of Meghalaya has paid for almost all the students, the chief minister however said, “Maybe some advance or they have to give some kind of undertaking but those were technical problems as you are aware that we had a lot of technical issues as government of India insisted on not sending chartered flights and hence we had to take commercial flights and that requires each student to pay by themselves through their own personal account or through cash and hence even though government wanted to book the tickets in the first day specially we had a lot of challenges.”

He further informed, “Yesterday and today, we were able to resolve those issues and today almost all the students are out barring one or two may be because of technical reasons but 99% of our students are now back in Meghalaya.”
