Meghalaya govt distributes land pattas to GAD settlers in Tura

Must read

Tura, Feb 10: The Meghalaya government on Tuesday distributed land pattas to settlers of GAD (General Administration Department) land in Nikwatgre, formalising land rights in the Tura Town Area.

The programme, organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), West Garo Hills, was held at the Nikwatgre Community Hall and attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who personally handed over land documents to beneficiaries.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the event as “a great and satisfying moment,” saying the issuance of land documents was the result of sustained collaboration between the government and residents.

He acknowledged that the absence of legal land documents had posed administrative, legal and financial challenges for families in the area. Without pattas, many residents faced hurdles in accessing loans, government schemes and other formal services.

“With land documents now in their possession, these issues will be resolved. It empowers people and gives them a sense of security,” he said.

The Chief Minister indicated that similar land settlement issues in other localities would be addressed in due course. Emphasising a consultative approach, he said the government would move forward only with the willingness and cooperation of the people.

“The government will not impose anything. We will proceed by taking people along,” he added.

District officials said the distribution of pattas would not only provide security of tenure to residents but also help streamline land records and strengthen land governance in the Tura Town Area.

The programme was attended by district officials, community leaders, beneficiaries and local residents, marking what officials described as a milestone in resolving long-pending land matters in Nikwatgre.
