Shillong, Sep 2: The state government will invest Rs 6.6 crore to support 165 students to pursue B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Management over the next five years.

This was announced by the Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh at the launch of the Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Programme (CMHSP) on Tuesday.

Lyngdoh said the objective of this scholarship programme is to encourage entry into higher professional education in hospitality, to guide and nurture youth for global opportunities and strengthen the state’s skill workforce in the hospitality sector.

“There will be hundred percent tuition fee support for students pursuing the B.Sc in hospitality and hotel management at IHM Shillong,” he said 165 students will be supported over five years, with 55 students (one from each block) availing the scholarship in three consecutive batches.

He said students must be permanent residents of Meghalaya, have cleared class XII with English as a subject and have an annual family income below Rs 3 lakh. There will be no age restriction.

The nomination of students will be based on merit and interest with the final selection done by a state level selection committee.

“The tuition fee will be covered by government of Meghalaya where the total investment for supporting the 165 students for over five years is Rs 6.6 crore. This means that we are investing around 3.6 lakh per student,” Lyngdoh informed.

According to him,  students will have to cover hostels, mess, uniforms and other incidental costs.
