Shillong, Dec 15: In a major push to strengthen policing and internal security infrastructure, the Meghalaya government on Monday issued a series of notifications creating a new police station and approving two advanced training facilities for the state police and commando forces.

Through a notification issued by the Home (Police) Department, the government approved the creation of a new Byrnihat Police Station in Ri-Bhoi district. The jurisdiction of the new police station will be bounded by Jorabat Outpost (Assam) to the north, Umsning Outpost/Sonapur Police Station (Assam) to the east, Nongpoh Police Station to the south, and Khanapara Police Station to the west. The move is aimed at improving law enforcement and response in the fast-growing Byrnihat industrial and border area.

In another notification, the government approved the setting up of an Urban Warfare Training Facility (UWTF) at SF-10, Mawiong, Meghalaya. The facility will provide realistic and scalable training ranging from basic close-quarter battle (CQB) to advanced multi-storey building clearance, hostage rescue operations, breaching techniques and urban surveillance integration. Officials said the UWTF will significantly enhance operational preparedness, reduce risks during real-time operations and strengthen inter-agency coordination.

The state government also notified the establishment of a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district. The proposed school will offer specialised training in counter-insurgency and jungle warfare to state police, commando forces and special units, strengthening Meghalaya’s capacity to deal with insurgency-related and terrain-specific security challenges.

Officials said the three decisions reflect the government’s focus on modernising policing, improving border and urban security, and building specialised operational capabilities across the state.
