SHILLONG, DEC 15: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to make the weighbridge at Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills District functional within eight weeks.
This comes after the court took note of an affidavit filed by the state respondents, which revealed that the weighbridge has been non-functional since September 2024.
“We direct the Transport Department to complete the entire process for making the said weighbridge functional positively within eight weeks from date,” the division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice HS Thangkhiew said in its order passed on Monday.
The court also expressed concern over discrepancies in the reports filed by the state government regarding the status of weighbridges across the state.
The Transport Commissioner had filed a report on May 8, 2025, which was later found to be inaccurate.
The bench has warned the state government to be careful in filing reports and disclosing steps taken to repair or construct weighbridges.
“The State should be careful in filing reports and disclosing the steps taken with regard to functioning of the weighbridges, as well as repair or construction of regular weighbridges, as the case may be, in
the report to be filed on or before the next date of hearing and all future proceedings,” it stated.
The matter has been adjourned till March 2, 2026, with directions to file a report on the progress made.
