SHILLONG, JUN 6: Ambiya Begum will be allowed to contest the upcoming Sobribari Village Employment Council election in West Garo Hills after the Meghalaya High Court quashed her disqualification on Friday.
A division bench led by Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh disposed of her appeal against a single judge’s June 4 order that had upheld her debarment from the MGNREGS-linked VEC poll.

The turnaround came after the State, through Additional Advocate General ND Chullai, placed before the court a letter dated June 5 from the Block Development Officer & Programme Officer, Selsella C&RD Block.
The BDO’s office conveyed that it had “no objection” to Begum contesting the election.
Based on that communication, the bench set aside the May 25 order that had barred her from the fray.
“In view of the aforesaid, nothing survives for further consideration in the appeal,” the court said, disposing of the matter.
