Shillong, Mar 13: The Meghalaya government on Friday honoured five artisans from across the state with the State Award for Handicraft Artisans of the Year 2024–25, recognising their contribution to preserving and promoting indigenous crafts.
The awards were presented at a function held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Commerce & Industries by Director of Commerce & Industries F. Sutnga, in the presence of Joint Director M. L. Wanshnong and other senior officials.
The five awardees are Phras Syngkli from Umkaduh in Ri-Bhoi district, Gilford Pde from Chilliang Raij in West Jaintia Hills, Mamsikha N. Sangma from Balsri A’ding Chitoktak in West Garo Hills, Ensila D. Shira from Rongreng Chidekgre in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills and Wanstep Thangkhiew from Umsong in Ri-Bhoi district
Each award carries a cash prize of ₹50,000, a trophy, and a certificate.
Officials from the Meghalaya Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation (MHHDC), Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India, and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) attended the event, along with national awardee Asuk Suting.
Speaking at the programme, Sutnga said the awards recognise the artisans’ dedication and the importance of safeguarding Meghalaya’s indigenous craft traditions passed down through generations. He added that the department will support the awardees with financial assistance, including seed money for work sheds, tools, and working capital, as well as opportunities to train and mentor young artisans.
The department also highlighted the upcoming Innovation & Research Centre (I&RC), which will use modern technologies, including 3D printing and design software, to help artisans develop new craft designs, enhance functionality, and standardise products while preserving traditional knowledge.
