Shillong, March 23: In a push to strengthen Meghalaya’s emerging textile and apparel ecosystem, an executive programme on kidswear garment construction was inaugurated at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong on Monday.

The initiative, led by the state’s Department of Commerce and Industries under the RAMP (Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance) programme of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and co-supported by the World Bank, aims to equip local entrepreneurs and artisans with specialised skills in a niche but growing segment of the garment industry.

Speaking at the inauguration, Joint Director of Commerce and Industries Moonlander Wanshnong highlighted the programme’s role in building a skilled workforce and unlocking opportunities in Meghalaya’s textile sector. He urged participants to fully utilise the training, noting that focused skill development could help translate local craftsmanship into viable business ventures.

NIFT Shillong officials emphasised the importance of technical expertise and hands-on learning. Joint Director Rimi Das encouraged trainees to remain committed throughout the course, stressing that practical knowledge would be key to succeeding in a competitive market.

The programme will train 25 entrepreneurs and artisans, with a focus on developing market-ready kidswear products while drawing on the region’s cultural aesthetics and craftsmanship.

Officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable livelihoods, strengthen MSMEs, and position Meghalaya as a contributor to India’s growing garment industry.
