Williamnagar, May 22: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak has urged students to cultivate scientific thinking, critical analysis and innovation instead of being influenced by misinformation and temporary social media trends.

He said this on Friday while inaugurating a science exhibition at Loyola Secondary School in Williamnagar.

Organised under the theme “Creativity, Curiosity and Innovation,” the exhibition brought together students, teachers and parents from different schools across East Garo Hills, with young participants showcasing science models and practical projects ranging from technology to environmental concepts.

The event was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO of Williamnagar Municipal Board Ripamchi Sangma, District Science Supervisor and Sub-Divisional School Education Officer Samuel Sangma, Principal of Loyola College Fr. Stephen Athikho, former Loyola School Principal Fr. Melvin and other dignitaries.

Welcoming the gathering, Loyola Secondary School Principal Fr. Victor Dmello said the exhibition was organised to create a platform where students could explore ideas beyond textbooks and develop curiosity-driven learning.

He said students from other schools were also invited so they could benefit from the interactive learning experience and exposure to innovative ideas.

Addressing the students, Marak said every major discovery in history began with curiosity and the courage to ask questions.

“Curiosity leads us to explore the unknown, creativity allows us to imagine new possibilities, and innovation transforms ideas into reality,” he said.

The minister cautioned students against blindly following online trends and misinformation, stressing the importance of reading books, conducting research and verifying facts through credible sources.

“Social media may provide information, but education teaches wisdom and the ability to think independently,” he said.

Highlighting the state government’s focus on youth empowerment, Marak said Meghalaya, under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, is promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, digital technology and scientific thinking through various initiatives under Mission 10.

He encouraged students to explore emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, renewable energy and digital innovation, saying Meghalaya needs more young scientists, engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs to shape the state’s future.

Following the programme, the minister and other dignitaries visited the exhibition hall, where students demonstrated and explained their projects.

Speaking to Hub News, District Science Supervisor Samuel Sangma said such exhibitions provide students with valuable exposure and practical learning opportunities. He added that efforts would be made to organise more science exhibitions in East Garo Hills in the future.
