Guwahati, May 22: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around 60,000 kg of smuggled foreign-origin areca nuts in two major operations carried out in Assam and Mizoram, officials said on Friday.
The seizures were made by the DRI’s Guwahati Zonal Unit following specific intelligence inputs on cross-border smuggling activities in the Northeast region.
According to officials, preliminary investigations revealed that the dried areca nuts were smuggled into India from Myanmar through the Myanmar-Mizoram border.
In one of the operations, the DRI was assisted by the 38 Battalion of the Assam Rifles.
Officials said five persons have been arrested so far in connection with the smuggling network.
The DRI stated that the illegal influx of foreign-origin areca nuts is causing significant economic losses to domestic areca nut growers while also affecting economic security in border regions.
Further investigation into the smuggling network is underway.
