Meghalaya raises age limit for SSA teachers to 45 years to apply for govt teaching posts

Shillong, Oct 23: In what can be seen as a step towards securing the future of SSA teachers, Meghalaya Government on Wednesday increased the upper age limit to 45 years to enable the SSA teachers to apply for government teachers’ post.

The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting held in Resubelpara in North Garo Hills on Wednesday, as part of the MDA government’s initiative “cabinet on the move”. Briefing after the cabinet meeting, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said the teachers already serving as SSA teachers will be allowed to participate in the recruitment examinations advertised by the government of Meghalaya for Govt LP, UP or secondary and higher secondary schools till the age of 45 years.

The SSA teachers in Meghalaya have been demanding the government to come up with a policy to secure the services of the 13,000 SSA teachers as done in other states across the country. They are also demanding implementation of a pay structure so that they don’t need to protest every time for a revision and that the revisions are timely.

As recently as two days back, another faction of the SSA teachers suspended their indefinite sit-in-demonstration in State capital Shillong after 21 days, seeking 100 percent enhancement in their salary.

House rentals and quarters

The Cabinet on Wednesday also approved rules to regulate rental house, allotment of government quarters, rental housing scheme of the employees of Government of Meghalaya.

It will also enable the Housing Department to take charge of their assets, evaluate, wherever necessary and take necessary decision with regards to creation of additional rooms and other infrastructure.

Support Human Capital Development in Meghalaya

Further, the Cabinet approved to avail loan from Asian Development Bank (ADB) for implementation of the project – Support Human Capital Development in Meghalaya – Phase – II.

90 percent of the loan amount will be grant to the state, which will be repaid by the centre and 10 percent of the loan amount by the state.
