Meghalaya seeks Centre’s nod for Disability Sports Complex ahead of National Games 2027

Shillong, March 19: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, on Wednesday met Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, and requested his intervention for setting up of the Sports Centre for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Meghalaya, which will be hosting the National Games in 2027.

In his letter to Dr Kumar, Sangma said, “I therefore seek your blessing in allocating this sports facility for persons with disabilities to the State of Meghalaya and I assure you the full support and cooperation of the State Government in the timely completion of this essential sporting project.”

The CM thanked the union minister for the initiative taken to set up 5 Centre for Disability Sports for persons with disabilities in the country.

“I am sure this initiative will go a long way in tapping the potential of the abilities of persons with disabilities once they are set up. It is a matter of great pride for us that one of the Disability Sports Complex shall come up at Shillong, Meghalaya. This centre would cater to the North Eastern region in general and Meghalaya in particular where such sporting facilities are critically required,” Sangma said.

Informing that Meghalaya will host the National Games in 2027, the CM said, “Such a Sports Centre for Persons with Disabilities would be an immense contribution towards providing the requisite infrastructure required for the National Games.”

He said the government has already communicated with Department of Persons with Disabilities that 40 acres of land at Mawkhanu, Mawpdang, New Shillong Township (NST) has been allotted for the purpose of this sports facility and this location could be finalised for setting up this centre in consultation with the officials of the Government of India.

“We were honoured to receive Officials from your Ministry on 13h February, 2025. Their visit reinforced our commitment to this project and we are cager to collaborate with your Ministry to bring this vision to life,” he said while assuring “…we are fully committed to this project at the highest levels and that the State Government will bear the cost for land levelling, site development and provision of all necessary amenities for the Centre for Disability Sports.”
