SHILLONG, FEB 18: NPP legislator from Umsning, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh, has hailed the Meghalaya government’s development efforts, citing significant growth in the state’s economy and improvements in various sectors.

“Meghalaya is second only to Tamil Nadu in the development index and the growth of the economy, we are one of the fastest growing states in India,” Lyngdoh said during the debate on the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on Wednesday.

He highlighted the state’s economic growth, saying that the economy has doubled from ₹29,508 crores in 2018 to ₹59,626 crores in 2025.

Lyngdoh also pointed out that the government’s investments in various sectors have increased substantially, including education, roads, power, and urban infrastructure.

“The government is really progressing and bringing changes in the lives of the people. In 2023, I challenged the government to provide an artificial turf football field in Nongpoh, and within three months, the foundation stone was laid,” Lyngdoh said.

He emphasized that the government’s focus on development has led to improvements in rural areas, including the construction of roads, increase in self-help groups, and producer groups.

“The number of self-help groups has increased from 5,800 in 2018 to 51,674 in 2025,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh also praised the Chief Minister’s efforts, saying that he is a leader who is willing to “walk the talk” and has addressed the issues faced by the people of Umsning.

“Street lighting for Umsning is completed, and the water problem is partially solved,” he said.

However, Lyngdoh also suggested that the government should take action against contractors who deliver poor quality work, saying that it “destroys the joy of getting a new road”.

He recommended that the government keep a record of such contractors and intimate the central government to prevent them from getting more jobs.
