Shillong, June 5: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh on Saturday informed that he is not in a hurry to take decision on NPP MLA Thomas A. Sangma’s removal from the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s House Committees due to the ebb and flow in the case of sexual assault against him.

“I feel that I should not rush in taking a decision keeping in mind the nature of the case which has been filed. As you all are aware today we have seen that the complainant (has expressed that she) would like to withdraw the FIR (against the MLA),” he told reporters at the sidelines of a tree plantation programme organized as part of the World Environment Day on Saturday.

He said he is in receipt of the letter by Congress legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh seeking Sangma’s removal from all the House Committees he is part of till the investigations are over and he is examining the matter.

He also said that since the government has forwarded the case to the court, “the court will look into it and see what needs to be done in the days to come.”

Govt should not tolerate illegal activities

Reacting to the recent coal mining accident that led to five miners being trapped inside a mine in East Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party (UDP) chief, Metbah Lyngdoh has asked the state government not to tolerate any kind of illegal activities.

“Be it illegal coal mining or anything, they (government) should not tolerate any kind of illegal activities,” he told reporters.

Stating that incident is a clear case of illegal coal mining, the Speaker said that he was happy to see the statement given by the Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui that stern action will be taken against those who are involved in illegal coal mining.
