Meghalaya to get uninterrupted power within five-years: Power Minister

Must read

Shillong, July 8: Meghalaya Power Minister, Abu Taher Mondal, on Monday said all villages in the State will be able to get “uninterrupted power” within the next five years.

“Within the next 5 years, electricity in every village should be uninterrupted,” Mondol said during an interaction programme with Nokmas and village elders at Aminda Rangsa, Gambegre, West Garo Hills.

Meghalaya’s objective to provide last mile connectivity to all willing households under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana Subhagya scheme’ is marred in controversy with allegations of corruption and nepotism.

A complaint has been lodged before the Lokayukta by Voice of People Party (VPP) legislator, Adelbert Nongrum. His complaint is based on a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

The CAG report unearthed, Meghalaya government incurred “avoidable loss” to the tune of Rs. 156.14 crore while implementing the Saubhagya scheme.

Despite these allegations the power department is moving ahead to achieve its objective and on Monday, Mondol directed officers to ensure uninterrupted power especially after storms and rainfall which disrupts connectivity.

The Minister, who was reviewing the department’s ongoing projects in Garo hills region, said sub-stations should be set up and voltages should be improved in the rural areas.

Announcing that a new sub-station would be installed and running at Damalgre within the next two to three months, Mondol said three villages in Gambegre constituency would get power connection.

Accompanying Mondol, Commissioner and Secretary, Power department, Sanjay Goyal said the department is working to ensure everyone receives reliable power with less interruptions.

“We are now focusing on area and block-wise in terms of power supply and trying to find out the problems the power sector is encountering,” Goyal said.
