Shillong, Nov 12: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said the government’s “first and foremost” priority is the rationalisation of schools across Meghalaya.
Speaking to the media, Rymbui outlined the objectives and said, “Our goal is to rationalize the schools — ensuring they have the required number of teachers, adequate students, and proper infrastructure.”
He added, “I hope we reach a point where all schools in Meghalaya have the necessary teachers, paving the way for transformative changes.”

Addressing concerns about staff under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the education minister assured that the state government will sustain the scheme even if the Centre discontinues it, noting, “Everything will be looked into… the Government of Meghalaya will see that this scheme continues in one form or another.”
When asked about funding, Rymbui said a concrete figure has yet to be determined.
“We have not come to a conclusion as to how much fund is required. We are working on it and hope to arrive at a figure in the next few days. We will then assess the cost implications of every incremental increase.”

He also highlighted the fiscal challenges, stating, “The quantum of teachers is very high… we will sit with the finance department to conclude how much the government can bear, keeping in mind other obligations like medicines in hospitals and road infrastructure.”
Rymbui concluded, “We will try to do justice for all sections of the people.”
