Meghalaya’s Eri Silk shines in PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address

Must read

Shillong, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted Meghalaya’s Eri Silk during the 123rd episode of his radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, calling it not just a textile but a symbol of sustainable heritage and indigenous craftsmanship.

Congratulating the people of Meghalaya for the recent Geographical Indication (GI) tag awarded to Eri Silk, the Prime Minister said the fabric is a testament to India’s rich cultural diversity and eco-conscious traditions. “Eri Silk is like a heritage for Meghalaya. The tribes here, especially the Khasi community, have preserved it for generations and enriched it with their skills,” he said.

Eri Silk, often referred to as Ahimsa Silk, is unique because it is harvested without killing the silkworms. “This method of production is non-violent and nature-friendly, which is why its demand is increasing rapidly across the globe,” PM Modi remarked.

He further highlighted Eri Silk’s adaptability, noting that it keeps the body warm in winter and cool in summer—qualities that make it suitable for different climates and markets. “Eri Silk is a perfect product for the global market,” he added.

The Prime Minister also commended the role of women-led Self Help Groups in Meghalaya for scaling up Eri Silk production while preserving traditional methods. “They are now taking this heritage forward on a larger scale,” he said, urging citizens to support such local products.

As part of his broader push for Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat, Modi encouraged listeners to try clothes made from Eri Silk and continue supporting the handloom and handicraft industries. “If customers buy only products made in India and traders sell only products made in India, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan will be infused with new energy,” he said.

Eri Silk, indigenous to the Northeastern region, especially Assam and Meghalaya, is now finding renewed attention, both for its ecological appeal and its potential in fashion and wellness textiles.

A few days back, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising ‘Ryndia – Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri silk, handwoven by Ri Bhoi district’s women weavers.

Taking to X, Sangma wrote, “Grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji for recognising Ryndia — Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri silk, handwoven by Ri-Bhoi District’s women weavers. Thanks to designer KINIHO for reinterpreting our heritage with care and creativity.”

Sangma also shared a letter received from the Prime Minister, who expressed gratitude to the CM for presenting a piece of ‘Ryndia Silk’ fabric, a symbol of Meghalaya’s cultural heritage and pride. “Your thoughtfulness is touching and is deeply appreciated,” the PM wrote.

The PM also stated in the letter, “Today, people around the world are increasingly seeking products that not only minimise the impact on the environment, but are also ethically produced, reflecting a growing global commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. It is in this context that products such as ‘Ryndia Silk’ stand out. The grant of the GI Tag to it is yet another step that reiterates our resolve to promote such products on the global stage.”

“Whenever I have visited Meghalaya, I have been overwhelmed by the affection of the people, the pristine natural beauty and the unlimited potential of its energetic youth. Together, we will continue to serve the people of the state and ensure that Meghalaya plays a key role in the creation of Viksit Bharat,” he concluded.
