Aizawl, June 7: In the wake of relentless rainfall and landslides that have severely damaged key water infrastructure, the Mizoram government has urged residents to harvest rainwater as the state faces an escalating drinking water crisis.
The continuous downpour has triggered landslides across multiple districts, causing widespread destruction of pipelines, water pumps, and distribution systems. Aizawl, the state capital, is among the worst-hit areas, with the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department warning that normal water supply may not resume soon.

“The water supply has taken a serious hit, especially in Aizawl and other major towns. High turbidity in river water, coupled with extensive damage to infrastructure, has compounded the crisis,” a senior PHE official said.
The flooding of the Tuirivem River — Aizawl’s main water source — has made it impossible to pump water due to high turbidity and submerged pump sets. In the Hnahthial district, floodwaters damaged both the raw water pump and the control panel, disrupting power and water supply.
According to the PHE Department, four pump sets were submerged, five water intake points and 14 pipeline segments were damaged, along with seven gravity pipelines and six distribution lines.

The department has urged citizens to conserve water and make use of available rainwater for daily needs until restoration efforts are completed. Officials have also recommended using rainwater wherever safe and feasible.
Meanwhile, disaster response teams have evacuated 452 families so far. Of these, 338 were displaced due to landslide threats, while 114 families were relocated after their homes were inundated by floodwaters.
Authorities said restoration of water infrastructure is underway, but the scale of damage means it could take considerable time before full services are resumed.
