Nagaland CM unveils ‘Unity Shawl’ to strengthen tribal bonds

Must read

Kohima, June 7: In a symbolic gesture aimed at fostering solidarity among Nagaland’s diverse tribal communities, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday unveiled a specially designed “Unity Shawl” in Kohima. The shawl, which incorporates motifs and colours representing the state’s 17 major tribes, is envisioned as a collective cultural symbol for all Naga people.

Speaking at the launch, Rio said, “While every tribe in Nagaland has its distinctive shawl, the idea of a common shawl representing Naga unity had long been envisioned. This is a step toward building a shared visual identity among our people.”

Traditionally, shawls in Nagaland are deeply symbolic, representing the status, identity, and heritage of each tribe. The newly launched men’s version of the unity shawl features three panels, with the top and bottom sections using the common Naga colours of black, red, and white—colours widely used across tribal shawls. A women’s version has also been crafted to ensure inclusivity.

The shawls were conceptualised and woven at the Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. (NHHDC) production centre in Dimapur. Beyond being garments, shawls in Naga culture are often offered as marks of respect, honour, and affection.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a seven-storey Naga emporium in Kohima, which will serve as a cultural hub showcasing handlooms, handicrafts, cuisine, and other facets of Naga heritage. The emporium is expected to boost local artisanship and promote tourism.

With longstanding concerns over unity among the various Naga tribes, the introduction of the Unity Shawl is being seen as a symbolic but significant effort to bridge cultural divisions and affirm a shared identity.
