Mystery deepens as missing Guwahati teacher traced in Shillong after distress message

Must read

Guwahati, Apr 25: The disappearance of 27-year-old former teacher Bhabana Sarma took a dramatic turn on Saturday after she was traced in Shillong, nearly a day after she sent a distress message to her family saying she was “in danger.”

Sarma was found near the Polo Ground area in Shillong, where a passerby noticed her sitting alone and crying near a bank and alerted the police. She was later taken into custody by Meghalaya Police and subsequently handed over to Assam Police.

Her boyfriend, speaking to reporters, confirmed they were in a relationship and said he had last spoken to her on Friday morning. According to him, Sarma had informed him around 10:39 am that she was heading to Miles Bronson Residential School. About 40 minutes later, she sent a message to her mother claiming she was in danger. Her phone was switched off soon after.

A resident of Tetelia in Guwahati, Sarma had left home on Friday and booked a cab, reportedly heading towards Azara. During the journey, she made a distress call to her family, triggering panic among relatives. When all attempts to contact her failed, her family lodged a missing person complaint at Jalukbari Police Station.

Investigators said her last known mobile location was traced near the Gauhati University area before the phone went offline, deepening the mystery around her sudden disappearance.

Adding another layer to the case, a ride-hailing driver who had dropped her earlier told police that Sarma had initially booked a ride towards Gauhati University but got off midway near Jalukbari Engineering College point. He claimed she was continuously on the phone during the ride and was carrying a bag.

After being located in Shillong, Sarma has been  brought back to Guwahati.

Police have not yet clarified the circumstances that led to her disappearance or how she reached Shillong. Further investigation is underway to piece together the sequence of events.
