NECARF condemns arrest of Catholic nuns, calls it a threat to India’s secular fabric

Must read

Guwahati, Aug 2: The Northeast Catholic Research Forum (NECARF) has strongly condemned the arrest of two Catholic nuns and their companions in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district on July 27, terming it a “deplorable harassment” based on unsubstantiated allegations of human trafficking.

NECARF described the incident as part of a “well-rehearsed insidious script” by hate-mongering elements, facilitated by what it called the “selective silence” of an authoritarian regime attempting to convert secular India into a Hindu nation.

“The arrests reflect not merely the prejudice of grassroots Hindutva vigilantes but also the intentions of a regime weaponizing the law to stifle dissent,” the forum said, adding that the inaction of law enforcement officials amounted to complicity.

NECARF expressed concern that India was “fast turning into a theocratic surveillance state where minority communities are being targeted under fabricated charges” and humanitarian service is criminalized as religious conversion.

The forum highlighted that since January 2025, there have been 378 attacks on Christians across India, with FIRs registered in only 17 cases. It urged the Church leadership to move beyond “tokenism” and adopt a stronger stance against such injustices.

Appealing to both the Centre and state governments, NECARF called for urgent steps to ensure the safety, security, and dignity of all citizens regardless of religion.
