Guwahati, June 18: A newly repaired bridge on the Silchar-Kalain Road in Assam’s Cachar district collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday.

New bridge on Silchar-Kalain road collapses after overloaded trucks violate weight limit

The bridge reportedly collapsed due to the passage of overloaded trucks carrying stone.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., with two trucks plunging into the Harang River as the bridge gave way.

The trucks had violated the prescribed weight limit, raising concerns about enforcement at nearby police checkpoints.

“The weight limit of the bridge was 40 tonnes, but these trucks were carrying around 120 to 130 tonnes of stone,” said Farida Parvin Laskar, a local Zila Parishad member. “The vehicles crossed three checkpoints, one of which is barely 50 metres from the bridge. Who let them through? Why was the administration silent? These questions must be answered.”

Following the collapse, Cachar District Magistrate Mridul Yadav and Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta visited the site along with other senior officials.

“There were restrictions in place, and four checkpoints were set up to monitor such violations. Still, this incident occurred,” Yadav said. “We have ordered an inquiry. Rescue operations are currently underway.”
