Shillong, Dec 11: The soon-to-be operational Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang is set to host its first-ever Pre-Christmas celebration on December 19—marking a symbolic milestone for the state’s legislative institution.
Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, along with Deputy Speaker Limison D. Sangma and senior officials, inspected the under-construction complex on Thursday to review ongoing work and preparations for the event. This will be the first official function to take place within the new premises.

A key area of focus during the inspection was the power supply infrastructure being implemented by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). The Speaker discussed expediting the connection of the main power line to ensure uninterrupted electricity during the celebration.

The team also reviewed land requirements with the Urban Affairs Department and conducted field assessments to track overall progress. Expressing satisfaction, the Speaker said the pace and quality of construction demonstrated strong coordination among all agencies. He reiterated confidence that the project remains on track to meet the timeline recommended by the High-Powered Committee (HPC).

Those present during the inspection included Commissioner & Secretary Andrew Simons, Secretary Malthus S. Sangma, the Executive Engineer, the Technical Adviser to the Assembly, officials of MeECL, and representatives from the Urban Affairs Department.

The Speaker had earlier stated that the main Assembly Hall is expected to be completed by June 2026, after which Assembly sessions will shift to the new complex.
