NHRC seeks ‘action taken’ report from Tripura govt on political and religious violences

Agartala, Nov 3: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday askedĀ  the Tripura government to submit an ‘action taken’ report within four weeks after it registered a complaint regarding incidents of political violence and violence against persons from religious minority community in the state.

The complaint was filed by RTI activist Saket Gokhale, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and was given the post of the party’s National Spokesperson.

He had mentioned about the attack on the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev during a campaigning rally earlier last month and the attacks on the religious minorities in Panisagar block of North Tripura district in which a mosque was set on fire.

“The Commission has considered the complaint and directs its Registry to transmit the copy of complaint to the Chief Secretary, Govt. of Tripura and the Director General of Police, Tripura to submit an action taken report within period of four weeks,” NHRC said in a report.

“It is alleged that workers of ruling party of the State had attacked leaders of All India Trinamool Congress while they were campaigning in the State,” the report mentioned.

Dev, who is also in charge of the party’s campaigning in Tripura, had filed a writ petition at Supreme Court regarding the attacks.

It added, “It is further alleged that on the date so mentioned, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) carried out a rally in an area under North Tripura during which one of the religious place of worship belonging to the minority community was vandalized and two shops were burnt down by the mob who carrying out the rally. Reports of violence against persons from religious minority community were also reported but ironically state machinery acted like a bystander by siding with rioting mob. It is also stated that post such incidents, there is an atmosphere of immense fear amongst the members of that community in the area with regard to their life and safety.”
