Guwahati, June 14: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a chargesheet against three individuals in connection with the ULFA (Independent) conspiracy to execute multiple IED blasts across Assam on Independence Day 2024.

Those named in the chargesheet include Paresh Baruah, also known by several aliases such as Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Nur-uz-Zaman, Zaman Bhai, Pradip, and Paban Baruah. He is the Chairman and Self-Styled Commander-in-Chief of the banned insurgent group ULFA (I). Along with him, the NIA has charge-sheeted Abhijit Gogoi (alias Aishang Asom, Rumel Asom, and Dhanajoy Moran) and Jahnu Boruah (alias Arnob Asom and Huntu).

All three have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A), and the Explosive Substances Act.

According to the NIA, the accused were involved in the planting of an improvised explosive device (IED) at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati, as part of a larger ULFA (I) plan to disrupt Independence Day celebrations by triggering a series of blasts across Assam.

The agency stated that the motive behind the planned attacks was to cause loss of life and property and to instil fear among the public while challenging the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India.

The case (RC-03/2024/NIA-GUW), which was handed over to the NIA in September 2024, remains under active investigation.
