Guwahati, June 14: A wave of grief and urgency swept through Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital as families from across India and even the UK arrived to provide DNA samples in hopes of identifying their loved ones killed in the recent plane crash.
Amid scenes of distress, over 200 families gathered at the hospital to give samples that may finally bring closure. Inside the autopsy rooms, forensic teams meticulously examined charred remains, relying on dental records and DNA analysis to piece together identities.
More than 275 DNA samples—collected from disintegrated body parts at the crash site—are now being matched with reference DNA from close relatives or personal items such as toothbrushes and combs.
“It usually takes about three months to analyse an individual’s DNA and issue the report. We have expedited the entire process and will do it within 72 hours,” said Dr. Saumil P. Merchant, head of forensic medicine and toxicology at Narendra Modi Medical College.
With many of the bodies severely burned or mutilated, visual identification is nearly impossible, making DNA testing the only viable method. Forensic teams continue to work around the clock to provide answers to grieving families.
