Imphal, Oct 30: Authorities arrested nine members from two militant groups in Thoubal and Imphal West districts of Manipur on charges of extorting money from residents and traders.
According to police officials, “Eight key members of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei) faction were apprehended in Thoubal District on Monday night. The group was reportedly engaging in illegal activities, including threatening civilians with sophisticated firearms and obstructing the legal land demarcation process in the area.”
A cache of arms and ammunition was seized from the UNLF (P) members, aged 24 to 46. The recovered items included three AK-47 rifles, two AK-56 rifles, one M-16 rifle, a 9 mm pistol, 147 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 20 rounds of M-16 ammunition, 25 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 16 mobile phones, and an unregistered SUV.
Despite signing a ceasefire agreement with the government, the UNLF (P), founded in 1964, has reportedly seen members becoming more involved in various unlawful activities.
